Message in a bottle

We are super excited to announce that we were successful in our first ever funding bid!

We have recently been awarded fudning for our new collaborative project with Queer Newham called Message in a Bottle.

Join our free zine making project! Get creative and send your stories and ideas floating out to reach others…Learn new skills and explore the themes of Newham and the Royal Docks: its histories, landscapes, communities, issues, dreams and daily life.

Who can join in?

The project is an actively queer-friendly space, centring LGBTQIA+ folks. We are particularly keen on reaching participants who are living in or are from Newham and East London, though all are invited.

I have never made a zine before, how do I get involved in the Message In A Bottle project?

There are lots of ways to take part...

Sign up for free live online zine making workshops in the last week of October: Monday 26th 7-9pm, Wednesday 28th 2-4pm, Thursday 29th 7-9pm, Saturday 31st (family friendly) 2-4pm

Follow on Instagram and watch videos by zine makers and artists to help inspire you.

Prefer to work offline? No problem, we have 50 physical resource packs that can be sent to anyone in the UK wanting to take part at home if online activities aren’t accessible to you. Get your pack here

I have made zines before and I don't need to attend an online workshop, how do I get involved in the Message In A Bottle project?

Great, in that case start creating! Contact us at queerzinelibrary@gmail.com for details of where to send your contributions. See deadline details below

When and where do I need to send my contribution once I have made it?

We are giving everyone until Monday 23rd November 2020 to create and submit work for the Message In A Bottle project. We can't guarantee work we receive after this date will be included in the collaborative zine.

You can send us PDFs, JPEGs of your work, you can scan or take phone images and email them to us at queerzinelibrary@gmail.com

If you are working offline from one of our physical resource packs it will include an address for you to send your work to.

What happens to the contribution I make?

In December 2020 these will be celebrated (anonymously if preferred) in an upcoming online exhibition. All participants will also receive a copy of a compilation zine featuring all work from the project. The collaborative zine will be added to the Queer Zine Library collections.
